Menopause, Sugar, and My Skin: The Change That Changed Everything

I never thought I’d be writing about acne in my 50s, but here we are. Before I made one simple change in my lifestyle, my skin was a daily frustration.

I’ve had rosacea almost my entire adult life, and while it came and went, these past few years it had gotten worse. Add to that, acne that made me feel like a teenager again, puffiness under my eyes, and some mornings even dark circles. Honestly, I chalked it all up to menopause. After all, the weight gain, hormonal shifts, and skin changes seemed to fit the narrative everyone warns you about when you hit midlife.

Sure, my favorite DRMTLGY under-eye patches helped with puffiness and dark circles, but the breakouts and redness wouldn’t budge.

The Turning Point: July 18, 2025

At that point, I was already about 40 days into my intermittent fasting journey. On July 18th, 2025, I decided to cut out all processed sugar—not just as a diet tweak, but as a true lifestyle change.

The results? Incredible!

Not only did removing sugar support my weight loss, but it had a dramatic effect on my skin—something I didn’t expect, since I had been blaming menopause for everything.

The Results: Clearer, Brighter, Younger-Looking Skin

  • Acne? Gone. No more nose pimples. No more cheek breakouts. Completely clear.

  • Rosacea? Calmer. After decades of battling it, the redness finally started to fade.

  • Complexion? Brighter. My skin tone looked more even, smooth, and healthy.

  • Aging signs? Softened. My skin looked younger—smoother and more radiant than it had in years.

For the first time in years, my skin changes weren’t just something I noticed—other people noticed, too.

I even have a before-and-after photo to prove it. What amazes me most when I look at it is the difference in the details:

  • The deep line between my eyes is completely gone.

  • The puffiness and bloating that made me look tired has disappeared, leaving me looking more awake and even younger.

  • My pores look smaller (I’m still not sure if that’s scientifically possible, but it sure feels that way when I look in the mirror!).

And the biggest surprise? I feel confident enough to go without makeup—something I never would have done in the past.

This is proof that lifestyle changes can work. No filters, no retouching—just me before and after cutting sugar. Notice the missing line between my eyes, the reduced puffiness, and my brighter, smoother skin.

Why Cutting Sugar Helped

Looking back, I can’t believe I didn’t see it before. Processed sugar causes inflammation, hormonal swings, and can worsen both acne and rosacea flare-ups. Combine that with midlife hormonal changes, and no wonder my skin felt out of control.

By removing sugar, I gave my body (and my skin) a chance to calm down. Suddenly, what I thought was all menopause turned out to be something I could actually manage.

Final Thoughts

I may not have the perfect before photo yet (though I’m still digging through my camera roll to find one), but trust me when I say the transformation is real. Cutting processed sugar didn’t just help me lose weight—it gave me back the kind of skin I thought I’d never have again in my 50s.

Best of all, I’ve found the confidence to go makeup-free more often than I ever would have in the past. That, to me, says it all.

If you’re struggling with persistent breakouts, redness, or dullness, don’t automatically assume it’s just menopause or “getting older.” Sometimes, the biggest transformations come from the smallest (but hardest) changes. For me, giving up sugar was the best beauty treatment I could have asked for.
